On April 2nd, 2026, Sony announced a new price increase for the PS5 across four regions: the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Japan. When it first launched in 2020, the PS5 was priced at $499.99 for the standard version and $399.99 for the Digital Edition in the U.S. market.
The New Prices
The updated prices are now:
- PS5: $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99
- PS5 Pro: $899.99
This represents a $150 increase for both the standard and Digital editions compared to their original launch prices. It is also important to note that prices had already been raised in the U.S. in August 2025:
- PS5: $549.99
- PS5 Digital Edition: $499.99
- PS5 Pro: $749.99
So compared to the 2025 prices, the new increase is $100 across all models.
Why the Price Increase?
At the time of the first increase in 2025, Sony did not provide an official explanation, and many consumers speculated that it was linked to U.S. tariff policies. However, this second price increase across multiple regions suggests that tariffs are not the only factor. It is now widely reported that the rise is mainly due to increasing component costs, such as SSD storage, memory, and other electronic parts.
So, Is the PS5 Still Worth Buying?
This is obviously a personal opinion, but I believe it depends on your situation. The PS6 is likely already in development, with some predictions pointing to a release between late 2027 and 2029. That is not that far away.
Because of that, unless there is a specific exclusive game you really want to play right now, it might be smarter to wait for the next generation instead of buying a PS5 at its current price. Another option could be to look into the second-hand market, where you might find better deals.
